Who’s thinking about racing a 5k right now? It’s January. Rainy, snowy, cold but yet, perfect for training. This time of year builds not only your running base but also your running mentality including your desire to run your best this year. Your desire grows with every step you take out in the elements.
Race Day: April 30, 2017
April 30th will be here before you know it. Be prepared for your upcoming 5k walk or run at the DOLAN Running Series kick-off, Race #1 of 3 the Downtown River Run. This event starts and finishes at the iconic Reno arch labeled “Biggest Little City in the World”.
If you did the series last year, you may have read my blog post about 5K Tips for Race #3 Bowers Mansion Run. If not, go check that post out here because some of the tips will also apply to this event and all the running events that you participate in.
Starting and finishing at the Reno arch at 8:35am. You will run from there to W. 1st St. where you will turn right. Next turn left on to Ralston St. which turns automatically into Riverside Dr.. Running by supporting businesses such as the Hub Coffee Roasters (free coffee to spectators on race morning).
Just before turning left on to Booth St. you will reach mile 1 and an aid-station will be there cheering you on with music. Cross Booth St. Bridge and turn right on to Idlewild Dr., then right into Idlewild Park on Cowen Dr.,
Follow the route through the park and at about 1.5 miles, (near the statue in the photo above) you will see another aid-station cheering you on. 5k Aid-stations will have water and Gnarly. This is where the 5K walk and run branches off to the right and 10k, Half Marathon, 26.2 Relay and Full Marathon runners branch off to the left. Do not follow their course, or you will be going too far!
Heading Back to the Arch.
Once you branch off at just over 1.5 miles, you will follow the pathway through the park back out to Idlewild Drive/Booth St. Bridge (which should look familiar - if you can process your surroundings despite the lack of oxygen from running so fast!)
At this point you will pass another aid-station (Same one you ran by at Mile 1). Head back to the Reno arch with just 1.1 miles to go and completely flat the whole way. There isn’t a single hill to climb, so if you are looking for a great starter 5k or a fast time, this is the course to do it on. You can view course maps here.
Your shoes are dying to register, you should be too! If you have not signed up yet, you can do so here. Prices go up on February 1st so get in today and save.
Good luck on April 30th,
Your Race Director
